Watch WebRTC Live #65: The Impact of New Tech on WebRTC Applications – WebRTC.ventures

On March 9, 2022, Arin welcomed Tsahi Levent-Levi to talk about how new technologies are going to affect the design and the development of WebRTC applications in the future. 

After a brief update on the acquisition of testRTC by Spearline, Tsahi jumped right in with the question of whether WebRTC has reached its peak after 10 years. 

Tsahi noted a few areas where WebRTC had a 4x increase in use:

• Work from home
• Remote work
• Healthcare
• Education
• New use cases, which will stay with us even after the pandemic is over. 

Tsahi traced the evolution of WebRTC from Exploration (2011-2014) to Growth (2015-2019) to Differentiation (2020+). 

What’s Next for WebRTC?

• WebCodecs – a browser wrapper for audio/visual encoders/decoders; frame-level API, no MTI codecs
• WebTransport – provides missing infrastructure so we can pick and choose what we want to implement using Web Assembly on top
• WebAssembly – taking a language (C/C++, Go, Java …) and cross-combine them into a WebAssembly binary file which runs inside the browser itself. Enables us to be closer to the machine and to do things around machine learning that we could not before. 
• AV1 – only 3-4 years old – still too new, but it is coming! Av1 now mainly being used for screen sharing  or dealing with very low bitrates

Table Stakes are Changing

The feature sets that are expected now are very different than before. For example, no one cared about background replacement a few years ago. Look for more about this in a future blog post from Tsahi on bloggeek.me.
